The Marketing & Communications Associate works with teams across Rare Brazil and other regions, strengthening the visibility of Rare's Brazil programs by translating results and technical knowledge into clear communications for diverse audiences.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Associate supports the production and dissemination of Rare Brazil's institutional communications, translating technical content and program results into clear materials for digital platforms and publications. Working with implementation teams and leadership, the Associate develops written and multimedia content, prepares briefs for socio-marketing materials, and helps coordinate communication requests aligned with Rare's guidelines.
The Associate is the primary point of contact for contracted service providers — coordinating content strategy, reviewing deliverables, and ensuring alignment with institutional standards — and contributes to editorial review of donor-facing and annual reports.
This position reports to the Manager, Development & Engagement, and operates in partnership with the Coordinator, Marketing & Communications, who reports to the same Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Marketing & Communications Strategy (10%)
- Support the Manager, Development & Engagement in shaping Rare Brazil's marketing and communications strategy, contributing inputs on branding, operations, and policies.
- Contribute to the development and governance of brand guidelines, editorial standards, and the content playbook, ensuring consistency across communications.
- Provide insights from content production, audience engagement, and digital performance to inform strategy and strengthen Rare Brazil's positioning.
- Support annual communications planning by consolidating inputs from program teams and aligning content calendars with institutional priorities and Rare Inc.'s global campaigns.
- Contribute to mapping audience segments (donors, partners, policymakers, government counterparts, communities, general public) and designing differentiated approaches for each.
Marketing & Communications Operations (20%)
- Serve as primary point of contact for external communication service providers, coordinating briefs, content strategy execution, and deliverable reviews.
- Define and maintain editorial content calendars aligned with Rare Brazil's program priorities, key institutional milestones, and Rare Inc.'s global campaigns.
- Review and approve content from external agencies and consultants, ensuring alignment with Rare's brand, editorial voice, and positioning.
- Assist in the design and execution of integrated digital marketing campaigns, both Brazil-specific and aligned with Rare Inc.'s global communications.
- Support the production and distribution of newsletters and other digital and offline communication products.
- Monitor digital engagement, compile performance data, and produce periodic reports with insights to inform content and campaign decisions.
Sociomarketing (10%)
- Support the Coordinator, Marketing & Communications on socio-marketing and behavior-change campaigns, stepping in to ensure continuity when the Coordinator is unavailable.
- Prepare detailed briefs for socio-marketing materials and behavior-change campaigns aligned with program objectives and Rare's Pride campaign methodology where applicable.
- Collaborate with implementation teams and service providers to produce visual, audiovisual, and multimedia campaign assets that engage communities and promote behavior change.
- Review and validate quality, technical accuracy, and brand application of socio-marketing materials before large-scale production or printing.
- Support post-campaign documentation and contribute to compiling learnings that can inform future socio-marketing and behavior-change efforts.
Coordination and Internal Communication Support (20%)
- Receive, organize, and prioritize communication requests across Rare Brazil's teams, ensuring timely responses, clear scoping, and proper
- Maintain digital repositories of communication materials (photo, video, asset libraries), ensuring proper tagging, rights management, and team accessibility.
- Support the preparation of communication materials for institutional events, panels, donor visits, field missions, and external engagements.
- Coordinate closely with Rare Inc.'s communications and marketing colleagues to ensure consistent application of Rare's global brand and to surface Brazil-specific content for global narratives.
- Prepare terms of reference for hiring communication service providers and support vendor selection through comparative analyses and technical reviews.
- Oversee the quality of deliverables from external service providers, ensuring compliance with institutional standards and contractual terms.
Content Production and Editorial Support (40%)
- Produce, edit, and curate institutional content for Rare Brazil — website copy, articles, newsletters, presentations, op-eds, publications — in Portuguese and English.
- Develop case studies, donor presentations, and institutional materials translating Rare Brazil's results into compelling content for fundraising, partnerships, and stakeholder engagement.
- Translate technical studies, program results, and research outputs into clear, accessible content while preserving scientific accuracy and institutional voice.
- Develop institutional narratives and strategic framings for specific audiences (donors, partners, policymakers, government, communities, public).
- Lead editorial review of donor-facing reports, annual reports, and grant deliverables, ensuring clarity, narrative consistency, and alignment with Rare's institutional tone.
- Lead end-to-end social media production for Rare Brazil's institutional channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, others): editorial strategy, copywriting, visual direction, publishing, community management.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Internal – Reports to the Manager, Development & Engagement, and collaborates closely with Rare Brazil's implementation, development, and operations teams, and with Rare Inc.'s communications and marketing staff. Operates in parallel with the Coordinator, Marketing & Communications, with no supervisory authority between the roles.
- External – Primary point of contact for external service providers, including communication consultants, public relations, designers, and multimedia professionals supporting Rare Brazil's marketing and communication initiatives.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBLITY
No direct supervisory responsibility. May coordinate tasks with external service providers as needed.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, or related fields.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or content production.
- Excellent writing, editing, and oral fluency in Portuguese and English.
- Ability to translate technical information into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences.
- Experience producing content for digital platforms, including websites and social media.
- Experience coordinating the work of external communication agencies or service providers.
- Proficiency in standard office tools (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Desirable:
- Experience with socioenvironmental organizations, NGOs, or campaigns on environmental conservation, fisheries, or climate change.
- Familiarity with digital marketing tools and social media management platforms.
- Basic knowledge of graphic design or video editing tools.
- Experience contributing to donor communications or fundraising-related content.
- Familiarity with behavioral science applications in communication.
- Experience preparing terms of reference or supporting vendor selection processes

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Professional office environment using standard equipment (computers, smartphones). May operate in a hybrid format depending on organizational policies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Largely sedentary role with some light walking around the office, such as lifting reams of paper or moving chairs and boxes. During field trips, one needs to be prepared for long inland commutes, minimum comfort, boat trips and long walks.
POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Full-time position; typical workdays are Monday through Friday 9am–6pm. Longer hours may occasionally be required. This position is eligible for Rare’s telecommuting or flexible work schedule program.
