About Fish Forever
Fish Forever is Rare’s global ocean conservation initiative. Fish Forever works at multiple levels, from communities and networks of local governments to sub-national, national, and global levels, to protect marine biodiversity, strengthen livelihoods, and build resilience of some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. The program links community stewardship with policy and collaboration across these levels to advance conservation at scale. Its work ranges from community-based fisheries management to connected marine protected area networks that safeguard biodiversity and support ecosystem health.
Since 2014, Rare's Fish Forever program in Indonesia has worked with the goal of improving near-shore fisheries. Most of the small-scale fisheries in Indonesia are inherently local, and these fisheries are anchors to the local economy – a key part of the social and cultural fabric of the archipelago and essential to the nation’s food security. To ensure sustainable coastal fisheries, effective management must focus at the same level as the activity - locally. Rare Indonesia has used behavior-centered design to build a community’s agency and capacity to address coastal fishing challenges and adopt more responsible fishing behaviors. To develop this agency and capacity, we have created a suite of tools that enable fisheries data collection, fisheries management body development, fisher goal setting and management plan development, and a process for Managed Access + Reserve (MA+R) implementation.
Position Overview
The Associate, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) will play a pivotal role in supporting the implementation of sustainable coastal small-scale fisheries at project sites across all provinces where Rare operates. Reporting to the Manager for Science and Fisheries, the Associate will adapt Rare’s global Fish Forever Global iMEL Plan for Indonesia use and assist its rollout through a continuous process of adaptive management, learning, and sharing of best practices and lessons.
The Associate will collaborate closely with all Rare Indonesia teams to ensure that survey protocols, data gathering tools, Indonesia data dashboards, and all requirements for our Monitoring and Evaluation and Learning are integrated, operational, and serve decision-making of the Rare Indonesia program. The position will also ensure that all Indonesia programs meet donor and Fish Forever Global iMEL requirements with Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning plans, tools, and systems.
