About Coastal 500

Rare is growing and expanding its impact through a range of exciting programs, including Fish Forever – a global initiative to restore near-shore fisheries in the tropics. Coastal 500 is the first-ever global network of local government leaders committed to advancing sustainable coastal fisheries and communities.  It was established in June 2021, and now has over 140 members from local governments that are implementing Fish Forever across 8 countries. Its goal is to inspire local action, foster learning and collaboration, and serve as a platform for highlighting the importance of coastal fisheries and elevating the voices of local communities in global forums. Coastal 500 will play a key role in Fish  Forever’s scale strategy, by growing demand for effective local governance of coastal fisheries. In 2023, it plans to open up membership to other local government leaders who are not yet working with Fish Forever and expose them to tools, best practices, and champions from the global network.
