Community-led solutions such as coastal fishery recovery, regenerative agriculture, and now climate mitigation.


Americans overwhelmingly believe in global warming, and most believe they should take action. Yet they do not know which of their actions has impact. Rare’s emerging US climate program called Make It Personal (http://www.rare.org/makeitpersonal) is Rare’s strategy to empower over 10% of Americans to take these high-impact actions.


Rare’s Make It Personal program has identified the workplace as one of the key channels for reaching millions of Americans, creating the concept for a service called Green Benefits. 


Americans change behaviors when they see colleagues and friends change and when it’s easy to do. The workplace is a strong influencer on American’s behaviors, capable of leveraging social norms and financial incentives to shape behavior change. Green Benefits packages the highest impact behaviors for climate change as desirable perks supported by employee engagement to coordinate a high impact behavior change. Employers benefit by jumping to a leading position in sustainability, enjoying a significantly greater productivity, acquisition, and retention.

 

Rare seeks a growth-minded program leader as our Green Benefits Director, a role to define and scale up a service that enables employees of large organizations to take on these high-impact actions.

 

Position Overview

 

Rare seeks a Green Benefits Director with an entrepreneurial mindset and product development experience to grow Rare’s Green Benefits from a concept to a fully scaled solution for the employer market as a means of reaching and influencing millions of Americans. The role is a tremendous opportunity to measurably reduce carbon emissions while creating norms and fostering values that bring climate-consciousness to culture and everyday decision-making of large businesses.


As the Green Benefits Director, you’ll be responsible for building and executing a strategy to scale from a couple of pilot efforts to 300-plus employers over the next three years. You must develop a passionate and every-improving understanding of employer and employee needs, the right target market, value prop, partners, and sales strategy. In tandem, you must shape and operationalize Rare’s capabilities to deliver effective and efficient measurable behavior change through employee engagement with the benefits.


The Green Benefits Director will join a highly collaborative, cross-functional team that brings together behavioral psychology + user experience design + marketing communications all working towards a mission to inspire 10% of Americans to adopt the individual behaviors that have the most impact to mitigate climate change.


You will report to the SVP of Make it Personal, one of Rare’s three programs. The SVP and Make It Personal Team will coordinate with you in further development of the Green Benefits strategy, solution, vendors, and partnerships. The role begins with a reasonable budget, pilot-ready benefits, a mostly-contractor team, and initial benefit-delivery partnerships.

 

Objectives and Responsibilities

Objective #1: Develop a Green Benefits service that attracts 300-plus employers over the next three years

  • Lead us from existing pilots to a successful at-scale product

  • Develop the value proposition, benefits, service model, and pricing that resonate with a targetable market of employers

  • Build and hone a successful go-to-market strategy, including the right partners, employer channels, and technology platforms to create an attractive, easy-to-adopt, scalable service

  • Shape and manage the marketing and sales capability and pipeline to create our customer base of employers and employees

     

Objective #2: Measurably reduce carbon emissions by engaging the employees of large corporations in the benefits and actions that matter most.

  • Create and transform the pipeline of employers into repeatable employee engagement and behavior change solutions
  • Manage and optimize the right behaviors and adoption efforts to generate the greatest adoption and measurable impact
  • Operationalized the capabilities to scale, which could include financing, technical systems, customer service, vendor management, and more
  • Develop key partnerships for scale, which could include benefits distributors and advisors, technology platforms, financing partners, and more

 

Situational Challenges

 

The Green Benefits service holds great promise of a solution for an interested employer and employee market. However, like any new business venture, the path to replicating initial pilots and scaling rapidly will have challenges. Navigating the employer and benefit ecosystem, making the right buy-versus-build solutions, and achieving it as a non-profit will be complex, yet our aggressive goals mean we need to tame this complexity and scale quickly.


While Rare brings expertise in behavior change for conservation, we’re not the foremost experts in the employer benefits market. We aren’t a tech company. We just have a passion for impact and solutionology that will enable the right change to happen in support of Green Benefits. This means we will need to balance our scaling strategy with our ability to prove out the potential and raise grants or donor funds to support investment in new capabilities and new roles. Just like any venture, additional funding, headcount, and partnership will come along with evidence of the opportunity to have impact.

 

Required Experience and Education

  • Seasoned professional—Bachelor’s Degree with at least seven years’ professional experience, including experience in product/service development and B2B relationships
  • Product-growth mindset—a passion for finding pathways to scale through experimentation and disciplined product/service development by finding and addressing acute customer needs
  • Natural salesperson—studies and empathizes with the needs of the market and individual relationships, converting opportunities into account relationships
  • Systems-thinker—knows how, where, and when to turn practices into processes and processes into automated systems to find efficiency and leverage to scale the market and scale the impact
  • Inclusive partner—create an ecosystem of partnerships and stakeholders where each participant benefits from reducing carbon emissions
  • Outcome-driven—Measurable reduction in carbon emissions will be your north star, and quantifying your progress to goal is your natural lens of assessment
  • Persuasive storybuilder—You create a vision and path to the future that others want to find their place in and support
