The Finance & Operations Manager will join Rare Germany to lead the financial management of Rare Germany, incl. the financial and operational management of the newly launched project “Pride on our Plates”.

The project is supported by the European Union through the SWITCH-ASIA program. In collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Wuhan Hezhong Agriculture Development Corporation (WHAD) and the One Planet Foundation (OPF) and Rare Germany, this project aims to empower Small and Medium- sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in China to respond to the challenge of food waste in China. The objective of the project is to strengthen China’s MSMEs through proven food waste solutions and behavioral insights to catalyze the prevention, reduction, and diversion of food waste in China's hospitality sector. More specifically, the project aims to:

• Promote adoption of more resource-efficient processes and services among MSMEs, including an actual reduction of food waste;
• Develop a Food Waste Policy Proposal to increase awareness on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and distill knowledge for wider replication, enhance policy dialogues, and support strengthening policies related to curbing food waste;
• Support sustainable consumption and consumer behavior change for SCP by training MSMEs to use a Behavior-Centered Design (BCD) approach to food waste reduction, and widely disseminating information to businesses and consumers. 

We are excited to have a Finance and Operations Manager with experience in European Commission financial management including finance and operations as part of the global project core team. In addition, this position will be connected to overall mange Rare Germany’s financial and operations. Rare Germany is a newly establish entity with a growing team. Rare Germany gGmbH works strategically closely with its partner & shareholder, Rare Inc., and pursues the same mission. The international non-governmental organization Rare Inc. and the Rare Germany advocate sustainable use of resources, climate, environmental and biodiversity protection worldwide. He or She will report to Rare’s Executive Director, of Rare Germany.

The Finance and Operations Manager will work closely all key project partners and in particularly with the staff of Rare’s partner institutions, the Center for Behavior and the Environment (BE.Center, US) and the Wuhan Hezhong Agriculture Development Corporation (WHAD, China) as well as Rare overall global operations and finance team (based in the US). Although the position is based in Berlin (Germany), the day-to-day work will involve close contact with global staff and partners, especially with program staff based in China and in the US.

Essential Functions

In close collaboration with the involved project partners, the Finance and Operations Manager will contribute to these objectives by:

Grant management & project finances:

• Lead on the Finance & Operations with regard to the financial management of the project SWITCH-ASIA, especially in preparing financial reports, audits and tracking of grant related expenses as well as activities
• Maintain meticulous records of project finances using spreadsheets and accounting software such as Intacct & Nexonia as well as relevant tools;

Financial, Administrative, legal support – Rare Europe/ Germany

• Process invoices and payment requests as well as track and reconcile bank statements, and cover other administrative duties linked to the day-to-day operations of Rare Europe (e.g. payroll, bank account, reports etc);
• Advice on financial reporting to internal stakeholders and external stakeholders (i.e. tax authorities);
• Support drafting of budgets, financial estimates and performing administrative duties needed during the development process for new grant proposals in relation to Rare Germany or other relevant fundraising efforts, especially for European based donors. 

Required Experince and Education

• Completed Bachelor’s and/ or Master’s degree in Accounting or other relevant fields;
• A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in nonprofit financial management, especially in relation to European Commission projects;
• Work experience as Finance Assistant, Finance Officer or similar role
• Good knowledge of accounting and bookkeeping procedures
• Demonstrated ability to be highly organized and attentive to detail; able to manage, prioritize and bring to completion multiple projects simultaneously
• Excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and written English
• Experience with German tax-, and non-profit (gGmbH) regulations are an advantage but not a must
• Demonstrated ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural groups and environment.
• Being a team-player and being comfortable with working in a global team through online media supported meetings and other virtual tools are a must.
