    Position Overview

    The Senior Director, Fish Forever Program will play a critical role in achieving these goals by working closely with the Fish Forever team and ensuring staff are well equipped to implement the strategy. S/he is heavily involved in financial planning, resource allocation, talent management, and project supervision. The Senior Director, Fish Forever Program leads the strategy implementation and oversees operations of the global program management team that ensures all programmatic and financial commitments are met for Rare’s Fish Forever program. 

     

    Rare is seeking an experienced business leader who will provide strong management and operational oversight for the global Fish Forever program. S/he must be an inspirational leader who can facilitate global team building and staff development. S/he must also be able to work across functions and countries; sometimes through influence rather than authority to drive change.

     

    This position has oversight of global financial management, programmatic grant/donor compliance & reporting, management reporting, operations, internal communications, and board program management. Reporting to Rare’s Senior Vice President, Fish Forever, the Senior Director will partner with both central and in-country program, finance, human resource teams as well as global development and program teams to ensure smooth program implementation. In close collaboration with the country leaders, s/he will build, refine and improve systems and processes to manage this growing global program. The Senior Director will manage a five-person operations team who support these efforts and manage the shared services team providing science and technology support to countries. The Senior Director doesn’t need to be a technical expert, but s/he should have experience managing technical subject matter experts to ensure delivery against the program needs.

     

    Essential Functions

    The Senior Director will exercise independent judgment regarding the following areas of significance:

     

    Program Management and Implementation

    • Support the SVP, Fish Forever in execution of global program strategy to scale the program in accordance to Rare’s Strategy 2020
    • Ensure effective program implementation tracking and resource allocation processes
    • Lead annual budgeting for Fish Forever
    • Manage the Fish Forever Leadership Team that composed of the SVP, Fish Forever and implementing country leads
    • Develop internal communications system to ensure all staff are informed and armed to discuss Fish Forever progress and lessons
    • Ensure program progress updates are compelling, accurate and delivered in a timely fashion to Executive Team and Board of Trustees Program Committee
    • Ensure program stories and accomplishments regularly flow to fundraising and marketing teams to fundraising effort

    Staff Management

    • Oversee Rare Fish Forever team directly and indirectly for staff in other central departments
    • Manage Fish Forever Operations team and Science and Technology Team
    • Participate in and/or lead enterprise level cross-functional initiatives
    • Attract, develop and help retain talent capable of meeting Rare’s current and future needs

    Budgeting and Reporting

    • Oversee annual Fish Forever budget development; regularly review the operating budget as well as monthly budget-to-actuals
    • Maintain effective systems for tracking spending rates; address anomalies in revenue and expenses
    • Maintain system to monitor funding pipeline against projected program costs in each Fish Forever geography
    • Provide timely and consistent communication with the Fish Forever governing body on strategic issues, programmatic updates and timely reporting

    Experience and Education
    The Senior Director will demonstrate an entrepreneurial penchant for taking on new projects and motivating staff with a positive, proactive attitude towards all tasks. The position requires strategic thinking, an execution mindset, and well-honed teambuilding and communications skills. The successful candidate is adept at problem solving and collaborating with different teams in a fast-paced environment. Other qualifications include:

    • A minimum of 10 years of program management experience leading large-scale, multi-faceted initiatives, departments or organizations, preferably within a fast-paced, high-growth environment
    • Demonstrated success in project management and advancing multiple projects simultaneously with exemplary organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail;
    • Proven abilities in staff management, project administration, financial management and demonstrated success in reporting key content across a wide range of audiences;
    • Sound business judgment and ability to manage changing priorities and competing deadlines to ensure accuracy and high-quality standards;
    • Strong writing and communication skills
    • A minimum of a BA with a Master’s level degree desired
    • Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and/or Bahasa Indonesia language skills a plus
