    Rare inspires change so people and nature thrive. Conservation ultimately comes down to people – their behaviors toward nature, their beliefs about its value, and their ability to protect it without sacrificing basic life needs. And so, conservationists must become as skilled in social change as in science; as committed to community-based solutions as national and international policymaking.


    Rare’s Center for Behavior & the Environment was launched in 2017 to bring the best insights from behavioral science and design to tackle some of the world’s most challenging environmental issues. Through partnership with leading academic and research institutions, we are translating the science of human behavior into practical solutions for conservationists worldwide. Our vision is that by 2030, conservation challenges are dramatically more solvable because behavior-centered design is the norm in our field. Within the Center sits Solution Search, a program uniquely designed to support this effort, by identifying, filtering and spotlighting what is working in behavioral science for conservation. The fifth contest, Climate Change Needs Behavior Change, unearthed 200 solutions from 46 countries around the world.


    In March 2019, the Center will host a large public event that highlights the role of behavioral science in conservation, particularly with respect to climate change. In addition to featuring luminaries in these relevant fields, the Center will engage and convene practitioners to develop global learning cohorts that apply behavioral insights to climate change mitigation.


    Rare seeks a highly motivated individual with interest and experience in the intersection between climate change and behavioral science. Working closely with the Center for Behavior and the Environment team, this person will serve as the team expert in climate change mitigation, support the initial convening of a climate change learning cohort, and produce relevant documents to promote the application of behavioral science to greenhouse gas emissions reduction programs.


    This role is 12-month, full-time role that sits within the Center for Behavior and the Environment.


    Essential Functions

    • Support the strategic development of climate change mitigation and behavioral science learning cohort
      • Develop a strategy and implementation plan for bringing together leaders in their respective fields to convene on this topic
      • Produce content, such as handouts, presentations and written briefs, clarifying the intersection between these fields and the importance of their engagements
      • Join the Center’s event planning team to create the agenda and materials for the first learning cohort meeting
    • Serve as the organization’s content expert on the latest climate change mitigation, staying is up-to-date on the most relevant research and organizations in this space
      • Represent Rare at relevant events and forums to engage with key audiences
      • Provide regular communications on recent findings
      • Compose articles and blogs reflecting the Center’s perspective and opportunity that exists in applying behavioral science to climate change programs
    • Write a Climate Change Needs Behavior Change solutions report
      • Build off the initial case document (released September 2018) to incorporate identified solutions, promising approaches and lessons learned into a post-Solution Search report
      • Collaborate with key leaders across Rare and relevant external organization to develop report content
      • Liaise with Rare’s Marketing and Communications team to design the final document

    Experience and Education

    • Advanced degree with a focus in climate change mitigation, or similar field. Applied research experience a definite plus.
    • Familiarity with relevant behavioral and social science disciplines (including but not limited to behavioral economics, social psychology, anthropology, cognitive and decision science, organizational behavior, etc.);
    • Demonstrated experience in applying these behavioral and social science to the climate change field and capacity to work across these two disciplines;
    • Ability to communicate complex concepts to a general audience;
    • Experience working in the climate change mitigation space, including familiarity with established networks and relationships, is a plus
    • Excellent communication and business acumen as applied to global, fast growth, fast-paced, innovative organizations;
    • Strong project management and people management skills, including the ability to manage up, down and across;
    • Ability to thrive in cross-functional team environments to build relationships across geographical distances, cultural communities, and up and down the organizational structure;
    • A commitment to Rare’s mission and values;
    • A desire to work on important conservation and environment issues such as climate change, overfishing, sustainable agriculture, etc is required; Knowledge and experience in working on some of these issues is a big plus but is not a requirement for the position;
    • Written and spoken fluency in English required.
