Together with our partners at EDF and UCSB, Rare is already making strides towards promoting widespread sustainable fishing practices in five countries.

 

Working in close collaboration with the Brazil Program Implementation Director, the Manager, Program Implementation will manage multiple conservation projects as well as provide one-on-one mentoring and technical support to local conservation leaders enrolled in the Rare Pride Leadership Program. He/she will also work closely with the Brazil Program Implementation Director to develop strategies, implement and monitor actions and evaluate outcomes and impact to promote the advance the program, with special attention to the social marketing and barrier removal initiatives.

 

The Manager, Program Implementation will exercise independent judgement regarding the following 4 areas of significance, in consultation with the Brazil Program Implementation Director:

 

Managing Multiple Conservation Campaigns

  • Provide direct and long-distance support and mentoring to Fish Forever Campaign Managers in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs in the field, maintaining contact via phone, text, email, internet, fax and monitoring / project support trips throughout the year.
  • Assist Campaign Managers in overcoming barriers to implementation, including relationship management, conflict resolution, technical skill gaps, and time management.
  • Manage relationships with campaign local partners, ensuring that Rare’s priorities of capacity building, constituency building, and conservation are met. This includes working with the Brazil Program Implementation Director in resolving any discrepancies or conflicts.
  • Support the Brazil Program Implementation Director in managing relationships with government partners (ICMBio, IDEFLOR-Bio, SEDAP, etc.) ensuring the integration and alignment of the different partner institutions in the implementation of Fish Forever campaigns. This includes working with the Brazil Program Implementation Director in resolving any discrepancies or conflicts.
  • Manage and facilitate the Campaign Managers’ production of required project deliverables, providing subject matter expertise and revision where necessary to meet Rare’s defined standards.
  • Work as part of a team to review and provide coordinated feedback on campaign products and assignments, campaign deliverables, project plans, materials in development, and final reports.
  • Spend approximately 10 working days per month conducting site visits for personalized support to field programs; complete support trip reports.
  • Manage program activities and monitor progress towards program outcomes and milestones. Document and communicate findings.
  • Utilize social-environmental expertise to facilitate communication and collaboration between Campaign Managers with the different social actors of the region.
  • Collaborate with the Technical team to ensure Barrier Removal interventions and other conservation management approaches related to the program are up-to-date.
  • Financial management and oversight which includes monitoring project expenses against the scope, ensuring high quality work products are delivered on time and within budget, adhering to Rare and donor requirements.
  • Represent Rare at events such as conferences, technical and institutional meetings, etc., as required.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Provide classroom instructions and students evaluation in training/workshop settings

  • Participate in the design of customized curriculum applying specialized conservation knowledge to meet specific goals of Rare and field campaigns.
  • Perform frequent language and cultural translation revisions to ensure materials are appropriate and effective to different audiences.
  • Collaborate in the creation of new tools and training resources to assist Campaign Managers and partners and reinforce the curriculum and training.
  • Teach the curriculum, communicate assignments, and review coursework.
  • Work diligently to constantly improve and update course materials, curriculum and tools for the Fish Forever program, and promote cross-campaign learning and network building.

 

Support Brazil Program Implementation Director to develop specific documents, criteria, materials, etc. related to Social Marketing and Fisheries Management as may be required

  • Apply knowledge of Social Marketing and Barrier Removal to support the development and implementation of the cohort strategy.
  • Guide team to maximize results of social marketing interventions of the Fish Forever methodology.
  • Respond to questions and provide advice related to specific sites, campaign planning and/or implementation on Social Marketing issues.
  • Advise on the development of common materials for all the field campaigns, including potential cluster and/or national campaigns.
  • Provide a resource to keep Program Managers updated on Social Marketing topics training/learning experiences that could fortify Campaign Managers technical skills.

  • Site trip reports
  • Budget and expenditure reports
  • Provide input for donor reports

 

Experience & Education

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of program management experience working in conservation, communications, and/or social marketing sectors.
  • Fluency in English and Portuguese language skills – both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated success in designing and managing complex projects from concept to completion.
  • Proven ability to teach, train, and coach adult learners using appropriate methodologies.
  • Must be a strong team player with an understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and cross- cultural environments.
  • Ability to collaborate and build relationships over long distances.
  • Experienced in using MS Office suite, databases, graphics and savvy learning multimedia software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required; Master’s degree highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in successfully applying social marketing and/or behavior change interventions is desirable.
  • Previous experience working with Brazilian (coastal) communities is desirable.
  • Previous experience in Brazil small scale fisheries conservation, management and policy is desirable.
